    Description

Barklya syringifolia, commonly known as Crown of Gold, is a distinctive and uncommon Australian native tree prized for its unusual heart-shaped foliage, graceful habit and spectacular golden-yellow flowers. Native to coastal Queensland, this species is naturally associated with rainforest and subtropical environments. It can become a substantial tree, reaching approximately 7–20m in its natural habitat, although plants are commonly smaller in cultivation. A mature tree can develop a canopy of several metres across. The large heart-shaped leaves are one of its most distinctive features. New growth can carry attractive bronze or rust-coloured tones before developing into mature green foliage. The flowers are the true highlight. Dense spikes of golden yellow to orange flowers are produced toward the ends of the branches, creating a striking display when the tree is in bloom. Growing Barklya syringifolia Crown of Gold performs best in warm, sheltered subtropical conditions with good rainfall. A deep, rich, well-drained soil encourages healthy growth. It is particularly suited to coastal Queensland and warm subtropical landscapes. The species can be relatively slow to establish initially, with stronger growth developing once the root system is established. Its graceful, sometimes weeping habit makes it an exceptional feature tree where there is sufficient space. It is particularly effective as a focal point in larger gardens, rainforest plantings and subtropical landscapes. The unusual foliage alone gives the tree strong ornamental value, while the spectacular golden flowering display provides an additional seasonal feature.
