Leptospermum liversidgei, commonly known as Citronella Scented Tea Tree or Olive Tea Tree, is a beautiful Australian native shrub prized for its strongly lemon-scented foliage. The narrow green leaves release a fresh citronella-like fragrance when brushed or crushed, making this an especially interesting plant for sensory gardens, outdoor entertaining areas and native gardens. The distinctive fragrance comes from naturally occurring citronellal in the foliage. Leptospermum liversidgei is also well known for its traditional reputation as a mosquito-deterring plant. The species itself is strongly scented, while the cultivar ‘Mozzie Blocker’ was selected for particularly high citronellal levels. It is worth noting that mosquito deterrence should not be considered a guaranteed replacement for proven mosquito-control products. This evergreen Australian native develops into an upright, neat shrub with fine foliage and small white, occasionally pink, flowers during summer.
