    Description

Leucospermum Carnival® Red – Red Pincushion Leucospermum Carnival Red is a striking evergreen flowering shrub prized for its vibrant red pincushion-style flowers and strong architectural form. This Proteaceae hybrid makes an excellent feature plant for gardens, large containers and cut flower gardens, with its bold flowers creating a dramatic display in spring. Leucospermum Carnival Red grows to approximately 1.5m high × 1.5m wide, developing into a rounded, evergreen shrub. Its distinctive red flower heads are particularly attractive when planted where they can be viewed against a contrasting background. For reliable growth, plant in full sun with excellent drainage. Leucospermum prefers free-draining, slightly acidic soil and does not perform well in heavy or poorly drained conditions. Once established, it has relatively low water requirements and good drought tolerance. Light frost can be tolerated, but protection is recommended in areas with severe frost. As a member of the Proteaceae family, Leucospermum is sensitive to phosphorus. Use a fertiliser specifically formulated for Australian natives or Proteaceae and avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers. Carnival Red is particularly well suited to feature planting, coastal gardens, borders and cut flower gardens. The bold red flowers also make it an excellent choice for gardeners wanting a distinctive flowering shrub rather than a conventional garden plant. The flowers provide nectar for visiting pollinators and nectar-feeding wildlife when in bloom, adding wildlife value as well as strong ornamental appeal.
