Sedum burrito – 80mm
Sedum burrito, commonly known as Burro’s Tail, is a popular trailing succulent admired for its long cascading stems covered with tightly packed, plump leaves. The blue-green foliage gives the plant a soft, cool appearance, while the trailing habit makes it particularly effective when grown in hanging baskets or elevated containers.
As the stems lengthen, they naturally spill over the edge of the pot, creating a cascading display. This makes Sedum burrito very different from upright succulents such as Echeverias and Crassulas and gives it an important place in mixed succulent collections.
The fleshy leaves store water, allowing the plant to cope with dry periods when grown in a suitable environment.
Light Requirements
Sedum burrito prefers bright light and can tolerate direct sun once properly acclimatised. Good light helps maintain compact growth and attractive foliage.
In Brisbane, morning sun and bright filtered light can work particularly well. Protect plants from sudden exposure to intense afternoon sun if they have previously been grown under shade.
Watering
Allow the soil to dry between waterings. When watering, soak the growing medium thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away.
Avoid frequent watering that keeps the potting mix continually damp. This is particularly important in humid Queensland conditions.
During cooler periods, reduce watering as growth slows.
Handling the Foliage
The leaves of Sedum burrito are quite delicate and can detach if the stems are handled frequently. This is normal for the plant and fallen leaves can sometimes produce new growth when provided with suitable conditions.
For this reason, position your plant somewhere where the trailing stems can grow without being regularly brushed against.
Growing in Hanging Pots
Sedum burrito is particularly well suited to hanging baskets, elevated pots, shelves and balcony displays. Its cascading stems create a beautiful waterfall-like effect as the plant matures.
