Description
Bougainvillea Bambino® 'Zulu' is one of the larger-growing Bambino selections, producing a strong display of very dark purple flower bracts against dense green foliage. Unlike the smaller Bambino varieties, 'Zulu' can grow to around 2m tall, making it suitable for larger containers, informal hedging, feature planting and garden beds where a more substantial flowering shrub is required. Mature height: approximately 2m Mature width: approximately 2m Position: Full sun to part shade Flower colour: Very dark purple Habit: Bushy shrub The deep purple bracts make 'Zulu' an excellent feature plant and give it a strong presence in the garden. It can be allowed to develop naturally as a shrub or lightly pruned to maintain a more formal shape. For the best flowering, plant in a warm position with plenty of sunlight and well-drained soil. Bougainvilleas generally produce their best colour and flower displays when they receive strong light. Water regularly while establishing, then reduce watering once the plant is well established. Avoid keeping the soil constantly wet, especially during cooler periods. A light prune after flowering can help encourage fresh growth and maintain the desired shape. In a container, regular pruning is useful for keeping the plant within its available space. Bambino 'Zulu' is a good option if you love the rich colour of bougainvillea but want a plant that is more manageable than many of the larger traditional varieties. Its darker purple flowers work particularly well against light-coloured walls, fences or paving. For Queensland gardens, a warm sunny position with good drainage will give 'Zulu' the best chance of producing the strong flowering display this variety is known for.
