For something genuinely unusual, Huernia zebrina Variegated is hard to overlook. Also commonly known as the Lifesaver Plant, Huernia zebrina is a fascinating succulent valued for both its unusual growth and its extraordinary flowers.
The plant produces fleshy, angular stems that form a low-growing or clumping habit. The variegated form adds another layer of interest, with attractive variation across the stems.
But the flowers are what make Huernia particularly memorable. Mature plants can produce unusual star-shaped blooms with a distinctive raised central ring, giving them the appearance of a tiny lifesaver candy.
Growing Huernia zebrina
Provide bright light, with gentle direct sun where the plant has been acclimatised. Very intense afternoon sun can be harsh, particularly during Brisbane’s hottest periods.
A bright covered patio, sheltered outdoor area or well-lit indoor position can work well.
Use a very free-draining succulent mix and a pot with drainage holes. Huernia is adapted to dry conditions and does not appreciate constantly wet roots.
Watering
Allow the potting mix to dry between waterings. During warm active growth, water thoroughly and let excess water drain away.
In cooler weather or when the plant is not actively growing, reduce watering.
Good airflow is particularly useful in humid climates. Avoid leaving the plant in a constantly damp position.
