Description
Pararistolochia praevenosa, commonly known as the Richmond Birdwing Vine, is a rare, native Australian climber and the primary larval food plant for the endangered Richmond Birdwing Butterfly. It features large, heart-shaped leaves and produces unusual, tubular greenish-yellow flowers with purple-brown markings, typically in spring and summer.
This vigorous vine can grow up to 6–10 metres and thrives in warm, humid climates with part shade and well-drained, fertile soil. It is ideal for growing on a sturdy trellis or fence and is highly valued in butterfly conservation efforts.
Important note: It is often mistaken for the invasive Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia elegans), which is toxic to Richmond Birdwing caterpillars and can be fatal to them. Always ensure you're planting the correct species to help support native butterfly populations.
